Are metal straws safe to drink from?

Food-grade 304 stainless steel is the same material used in cookware, cutlery, and commercial kitchen equipment. It does not leach into what you drink and does not react with acidic drinks like citrus or coffee. The safety questions worth asking about a metal straw are mechanical — temperature and hardness — not chemical.

Are metal straws safe for hot drinks?

Yes, with one habit. Steel conducts heat, so a straw sitting in fresh coffee gets hot faster than the drink cools. Let it sit a moment before the first sip, the same way you would with the drink itself. After that the straw and the liquid are at the same temperature and it stops being an issue.

Are metal straws safe for children?

For young children, no — use silicone. The hardness that makes steel durable is the same hardness that makes it a bad idea around a child who might run, trip, or bite down while drinking.
